IGNOU PhD Admission: Eligibility, Entrance Test, Fees & Selection Process

IGNOU PhD admission is different from normal IGNOU ODL or Online admission. Doctoral programmes are offered in Full-Time and Part-Time categories and admission is announced separately by IGNOU’s Research Unit.

Candidates should therefore not use the regular IGNOU ODL admission portal to judge PhD eligibility or admission dates. The applicable discipline, vacancies, eligibility and selection process must be checked from the current PhD admission brochure.

IGNOU PhD Eligibility

IGNOU follows the UGC PhD Regulations and also publishes discipline-specific eligibility for every admission cycle.

Under the general eligibility rules, a candidate may qualify through a relevant master’s-level route with at least 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grade. Applicable categories such as SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and differently-abled candidates may receive the relaxation permitted under UGC rules.

A candidate seeking PhD admission directly after an eligible four-year/eight-semester bachelor’s degree is generally required to have at least 75% aggregate marks or equivalent grade, with applicable relaxation under UGC rules.

Do not apply only on the basis of the general percentage rule. Each PhD discipline can prescribe a specific qualifying subject, degree or additional requirement. Always check the discipline-wise eligibility in the current IGNOU PhD brochure.

How IGNOU PhD Admission Works

IGNOU can admit candidates through different categories depending on their UGC-NET status or through the University’s own entrance test.

CategoryAdmission RouteSelection
Category IUGC-NET with JRFInterview / Viva-Voce
Category IIUGC-NET eligible for Assistant Professor and PhDNET score + Interview
Category IIIUGC-NET eligible for PhD onlyNET score + Interview
Category IVIGNOU University-level Entrance TestEntrance Test + Interview

IGNOU PhD Entrance Test and Interview

The Interview/Viva-Voce is mandatory for all admission categories.

For candidates admitted through the University-level entrance-test route, the current IGNOU selection framework gives 70% weightage to the entrance test and 30% to the interview. Eligible UGC-NET Categories II and III similarly use 70% NET score and 30% interview weightage.

JRF candidates are considered through their applicable category and interview process as specified in the current admission brochure.

The interview assesses areas such as research methodology, subject knowledge and communication of the proposed research idea.

IGNOU PhD Coursework

After admission, PhD scholars must complete the prescribed coursework. IGNOU states that coursework is conducted during the initial stage of the programme at the respective School of Studies at IGNOU Headquarters, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi.

A minimum of 80% attendance in coursework is mandatory.

This is particularly important for working candidates who assume that a Part-Time PhD means that the programme can be completed entirely from home.

Full-Time vs Part-Time IGNOU PhD

IGNOU permits both Full-Time and Part-Time doctoral registration. Candidates who are already employed and want to pursue a Part-Time PhD are required to obtain the prescribed No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer where applicable.

The NOC requirement should be checked before the interview because the current admission brochure can require it at that stage.

IGNOU PhD Duration

The normal minimum duration of the PhD programme is three years and the maximum duration is six years.

IGNOU’s PhD rules provide additional time beyond the normal maximum duration for eligible women candidates and Persons with Disabilities according to the applicable regulations.

IGNOU PhD Fees

There are two different charges students often confuse:

  • Application fee: charged while submitting the PhD admission application.
  • Programme / registration / coursework fee: payable after admission according to the applicable discipline and current University fee structure.

For the July 2026 admission cycle, IGNOU prescribed an application fee of ₹2,000. This amount should not be treated as the total PhD programme fee.

Programme fee is not safe to quote as one universal amount. IGNOU’s discipline pages currently show different fee details for some PhD programmes. Check your exact PhD programme page and the latest Research Unit fee structure before payment.

Do All IGNOU PhD Subjects Open Every Year?

No fixed list should be assumed for every admission cycle. IGNOU announces the disciplines, number of vacancies and category-wise seats in the relevant PhD admission brochure.

A programme appearing on the IGNOU website does not automatically mean that seats are available in the current admission cycle.

Best practice: First check the current PhD notification, then the discipline-wise vacancy and eligibility table, and only after that submit the application.
