IGNOU passing marks in 2026 are not the same for every student. Depending on your programme and course, the required minimum may be 35%, 40%, 50% or another prescribed standard. Your assignment, Term-End Examination (TEE), practical and project components may also have separate pass requirements.
Quick answer: If your course requires 35%, that is 35 out of 100. If it requires 40%, that is 40 out of 100. If it requires 50%, that is 50 out of 100. Do not use the same percentage for all IGNOU courses. Check the evaluation scheme in the programme guide for your course and admission/session rules.
IGNOU Passing Marks Out of 100, 50 and 70
Use this table after checking the minimum percentage in your applicable programme guide. These figures explain the mathematics; they do not assign a passing rule to a particular IGNOU course.
| Required minimum | Out of 100 | Out of 50 | Out of 70 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35% | 35 | 17.5 | 24.5 |
| 40% | 40 | 20 | 28 |
| 50% | 50 | 25 | 35 |
Important for papers out of 50: 35% of 50 is 17.5 marks. If marks are awarded only as whole numbers, 18 is the first whole-number score above that threshold. However, some IGNOU programme guides explicitly print 17.5 as the minimum for particular courses (for example, FEG-02 and BCS-040 in the BCA_NEWOL guide). Follow the official course-specific minimum and marking rules; do not assume IGNOU always rounds it to 18.
Do IGNOU Assignments and Theory Exams Have Separate Passing Marks?
In many programmes, yes. Successful course completion requires the prescribed minimum in the assignment or continuous-evaluation component and the Term-End Examination independently. IGNOU may also require separate passing in a practical, project report or viva.
Suppose your course requires 40% separately in both components and you score 75/100 in the assignment but 32/100 in the theory exam. The high assignment score does not make the failed theory component a pass. Likewise, 70/100 in the TEE may not compensate for a failed assignment where separate passing is mandatory.
The applicable rule always comes from your programme and course evaluation scheme. The university’s examination information explains that the mix and weightage of assessments are prescribed for each programme.
Is 35 Marks a Pass in IGNOU?
35 out of 100 is a pass only where the required minimum is 35%. It is not an IGNOU-wide passing rule. Students in BA, BCom, BSc, BCA and postgraduate programmes should check their own course requirements rather than using a percentage shared for another course.
Is 40 Marks a Pass in IGNOU?
40 out of 100 meets a 40% minimum. A number of IGNOU programmes and courses require 40%, but the passing standard for a particular subject may be lower or higher. Also check whether the assignment, practical or project has its own threshold.
Is 50 Marks a Pass in IGNOU?
For a course that requires at least 50%, 50/100 meets that minimum. Not every course has a 50% rule, but some specialised BCA components do. A 50% assignment or exam requirement should never be inferred merely from the programme being a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
IGNOU BCA Passing Marks: Why the Course Code Matters
The BCA_NEW and BCA_NEWOL evaluation guides are useful examples of why one passing percentage does not cover an entire programme. They prescribe 40% for many courses, 35% for some specified courses, and 50% for particular specialised subjects.
| BCA course examples | Minimum stated in relevant BCA guides | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Many BCS theory and BCSL laboratory courses | 40% | Assignment and TEE/practical rules; some lab sections must be passed separately |
| BEVAE-181, BEGLA-136, BCS-040, BCOC-131, BCOS-184, BECS-184, BCOS-185 and FEG-02 | 35% exceptions listed in the May 2026 BCA_NEW guide | Check the specific paper’s maximum marks and your programme version |
| MSEI-023 and MSEI-027 | 50% | Assignment and theory/practical requirements as specified |
| BCSP-165 project | 40% | Project report and viva-voce separately |
Do not apply this BCA example table to an old BCA syllabus or to another degree. Course availability and assessment rules can differ by admission cycle and programme code. If your guide gives a specific marks figure, use that official figure.

IGNOU BA, BCom, BSc and Other Bachelor’s Programme Passing Marks
Some undergraduate subjects have a 35% qualifying standard, while others use a different requirement. The precise rule may depend on your programme structure, course, admission cycle and whether the work is theory, practical or continuous assessment.
For example, IGNOU’s BGYCT-135 assignment booklet for 2026 states that 35% is needed to pass that assignment. It does not establish 35% as the pass mark for all BSc subjects or for the same course’s other assessment components.
IGNOU MA, MCom, MBA, MCA and Other PG Passing Marks
There is no safe single passing percentage for every IGNOU postgraduate programme. Check the programme handbook’s Evaluation, Grading or Examinations section, including any separate assignment, TEE, practical or dissertation requirement.
Do not confuse the minimum admission eligibility percentage with the minimum score required to pass an IGNOU course; these are different rules.
IGNOU Diploma and Certificate Passing Marks
Diploma and certificate programmes can have their own minimum marks and evaluation methods. If the course includes fieldwork, a practical, a project or a viva, check whether that component must be passed independently. The relevant programme guide is more reliable than a general passing-marks chart.
IGNOU Assignment and TEE Weightage: 30:70 or 25:75?
Passing marks and component weightage are different. Several courses use 30% assignment and 70% TEE weightage, while some BCA courses use 25% continuous assessment and 75% TEE. Other assessment schemes are possible.
For illustration only, suppose a course uses 30:70, and both components are marked out of 100. A 70/100 assignment and 60/100 theory score give a combined percentage of (70 × 0.30) + (60 × 0.70) = 63%. But this calculation does not remove any separate minimum that the course requires.

What Happens If You Fail an IGNOU Assignment?
If you do not meet a required assignment pass criterion, that compulsory component is not cleared. Re-submission rules depend on the programme and the assignment’s validity. Consult the current assignment booklet and programme handbook before preparing a fresh submission.
For preparation and the correct route, see how to write an IGNOU assignment and how to submit an IGNOU assignment.
What Happens If You Fail the IGNOU Term-End Exam?
If you score below the required TEE minimum, you can generally appear again in a later examination opportunity while your registration is valid and you meet the applicable eligibility rules. Do not assume that a passed assignment must automatically be repeated; check its validity and the programme’s reappearance provisions.
Why Does My IGNOU Grade Card Say “Not Completed”?
“Not Completed” does not always mean your theory exam was failed. The course may still have an uncleared, missing or not-yet-updated assignment, practical, project or viva entry.
- Open the official IGNOU results and grade-card page.
- Find the affected course code and inspect all available assessment columns, not just TEE theory marks.
- Compare your marks with the separate pass requirements in your applicable programme guide.
- If an assignment you submitted is missing, check the assignment-status process and follow up with your Study Centre/Regional Centre using your submission proof.
Some marks are uploaded later than others, so a missing entry is not conclusive evidence of failure. IGNOU’s final academic record is authoritative.
How to Find the Exact Passing Marks for Your IGNOU Course
- Find your programme code and exact course code from your registration records.
- Open the programme guide or handbook that applies to your admission/session on the official IGNOU website.
- Locate Evaluation Scheme, Minimum Qualifying Marks or Assessment and Examination.
- Check the required score for assignment, TEE, practical, project and viva as applicable, including maximum marks and any rounding instruction.
- Compare each required minimum with the corresponding grade-card component.
IGNOU Passing Marks FAQs
What are the IGNOU passing marks out of 100?
The answer is course-specific: 35 marks for a 35% minimum, 40 for a 40% minimum and 50 for a 50% minimum. Check your programme guide before choosing which rule applies.
Is 18 out of 50 passing in IGNOU?
18/50 is 36%, so it exceeds a 35% minimum. However, 35% of 50 is exactly 17.5; some IGNOU course guides explicitly specify 17.5. Use the official minimum and marking rules for your course.
Is 20 out of 50 passing in IGNOU?
20 out of 50 equals 40%. It meets a 40% minimum but not a 50% minimum.
Do assignment and term-end exam marks have to be passed separately?
Many IGNOU programmes require separate passing in assignments and the TEE, along with other compulsory components where applicable. Verify the evaluation scheme for your specific course.
Can high assignment marks compensate for failing theory?
Not where the programme requires separate passing. A strong assignment result does not clear a theory component that is below its compulsory minimum.
What are IGNOU BCA passing marks?
Many BCA_NEW/BCA_NEWOL subjects use 40%. The May 2026 BCA_NEW guide also lists 35% exceptions and 50% requirements for specified subjects. Check the course code and programme version.
Is the IGNOU assignment minimum always 35%?
No. An IGNOU Regional Centre FAQ describes 35–40% as common and advises learners to verify their programme guide. Some courses can prescribe other minima.
Why is the IGNOU grade card still Not Completed?
The university may still need to receive or process marks for one or more compulsory components, or a component may not meet the required standard. Review all the columns for the course and follow up if an expected record is missing.
Where is the official IGNOU passing-marks rule published?
Look in the evaluation or examination section of the programme guide or learner handbook that applies to your admission cycle, programme and course code.
